The photographer’s worst nightmare: being dragged out and forced to stand in front of the camera!

Yes, we have a certain style and flair, so it's no wonder really, lol. I'm not saying that we're shy, far from it, but we mostly prefer to hide behind our cameras than to be in front of the lens.

Still, people will insist on taking our pictures from time to time. So, what to do when you can’t avoid being photographed? There are tons of tricks and tips that are supposed to make you look great when the shutter clicks. Photojojo, have combed through the best and worst, and have wittled them down to the ones that actually work.

And if that doesn't work, there's always a little helping hand from Photoshop ;-)

» DJ MAG TOP 100 DJ POLL 2008

Posted : November 4 2008 by Andy B

DJ Mag Top 100 ClubsNo surprise really to see the same names dominating the Top 10, with trance once again occupying the vast majority.

With 350,000 votes coming in from 167 countries, reflecting the fact that we really do inhabit a dance music planet!

It was a close run thing but Armin van Buuren retained his crown as the No. 1 DJ for the second year running, ahead of fellow trancemasters Tïësto and Paul Van Dyk. The Anjunabeats future trance trio Above & Beyond are up two places at No.4, and David Guetta zapped from No.10 to No.5 to be the highest placed house DJ. Progressive trance dude Markus Schulz also bust into the Top 10, up five spots from No.13 to No.8.

Like last year, no breaks DJs have dented the poll once again with the hard dance scene also woefully absent: only Lisa Lashes appears (#77), the only woman in the poll bar techno queen Magda (#76).

Love it or loath it, the Top 100 DJs poll is a snapshot of a DJ’s worldwide popularity and visibility. Check out this year’s results in full and let the heated debate begin.

The top 3 in the list are:

1 » Armin Van Buuren

2 » Tïësto

3 » Paul Van Dyk

The weekend just gone was a good one and I enjoyed it, meeting up with mates I hadn't seen for a couple of weeks etc. But there was one thing I seemed to notice about the night and the local nightlife in general, is that it might be getting a bit stale. Musically, it seems that the rule of thumb these days is to play the same music week after week ad nauseum, except for a couple of quality venues at the top of town *cough* Mumbai Bluu and Smack *cough* with DJ's that are actually seem to play new music or at least know how to work the crowd into a frenzy! (Honourable mention to The Lounge who were playing some quality back-in-the-day classics which I hadn't heard in years! FSOL "Papua New Guinea" and Orbital "Chime" amongst others.)  This in part, is probably down to the venues playing it safe, yes there is a credit crunch going on after all and venues need to keep people at the bar and on the dancefloor. But if you keep hearing what seems like the same old tunes week in week out in the bars and clubs, it just feels as if the whole night is like a record that keeps sticking in the same groove, then the local nightlife will never be able to evolve and grow, hardly anyone is taking a risk and getting some quality new music out there. Why just stick with what you know, get out of your comfort zone and every so often dip your toe in the waters of something new. You never know, you might just like it, but you'll never know unless you give it a try!

Next week, a bit of a change, as Residentclubber.co.uk goes on a road trip and samples the bright lights and big city delights of Birmingham. Not been for a while so, looking forward to this one!

» The cuban brothers at smack!

Posted : October 20 2008 by Andy B

Cuban BrothersWow! What a brilliant show, top class entertainment for a Saturday night!

They were only on for an hour or so, but after getting warmed early on up with the electic sounds of funk, breakbeat and hip hop from resident DJ Jem Atkins, the Cuban Brothers soon took over with their brand of smooth moves and crazy antics!

It was the first time I'd seen them in action, and after last night, it will definitely not be the last. One of the best club nights I've had in Leamington in a long time! A definite change from the repetitive rubbish that usually gets churned out week after week in Leamington! A quality blend of old school funk, hip hop and breakbeat with the on-stage energy from Miguel, Archerio, Kengo-san and Clemente charging up the crowd at Smack. All in all, I hope the Cuban Brothers come back very soon, and I for one, will be right down the front getting my funk on!

» Happy birthday residentclubber.co.uk!

Residentclubber was initially just an idea for somewhere to host my pictures from nights out in Birmingham, and in particular Godskitchen, back in 2001 - way before MySpace and Facebook were around. The first version of the Residentclubber website was originally hosted on the free webspace at MSN Groups / Communities and then Yahoo Geocities until the site started to outgrow it's humble beginnings and needed a much larger home.

After a couple of years enjoying the bright lights of the Birmingham nightlife it wasn't until September 2003 until the Residentclubber cameras were out and about locally in Leamington Spa. Residentclubber.co.uk has definitely grown in size and stature and after seven years it still continues to bring you photos from weekend's festivities.

Over time the website has expanded and now includes a multimedia section with videos of some of the events I've attended, as well as some of the flyers and posters I've designed, an events section from the small nights that we've put on locally that have attracted the best up and coming DJ's, as well as my own DJ section.

In the many years the website has been around, I've visited quite a few venues and events from the Midlands, with Birmingham and Leamington being the main areas for fun and frolics. Most memorable nights include; Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Hed Kandi, Polysexual, Sundissential, Fuel, Global Gathering, Bounce plus a whole lot of smaller local nights in bars, but just as good (sometimes even better) than some of the club nights I've attended.

A selection of photos from the early days can now be found on the following websites:
